Eleven albums in, Jay-Z is an international superstar, and among the most well-known musicians on the planet, so no one expects him to still be rapping about "coming up" and "making it." But parts of Blueprint 3 feel insulated and impersonal, two words that could never be associated with Reasonable Doubt, Vol. While much of it sounds like vintage Hov, the intensity of the early days is notably absent. Jay-Z didn't rise to the top of the hip-hop world by being meek and mellow he is a force to be reckoned with on the mic, and even handier on the marketing side of the business.Īlthough The Blueprint 3 is musically a return to form (after Kingdom Come and American Gangster didn't quite live up to Jay-Z's considerable legacy), it suffers from a lack of punch. ![]() In many ways, it is a reminder of all the things that make Jay-Z albums great: great flow, slick production, and creative self-aggrandizement. In the rap game, it doesn't get any bigger than Jay-Z, and he has unretired (Why not? Everyone is doing it…) to unleash his latest record, The Blueprint 3.
